Bats

MAMMAL: Has wings and often nests in attics in our area. In our area, the common types inside are the little brown bat and the big brown bat. Bats droppings can attract other pests, and bats can have bat bugs, which, like bedbugs, will bite people if no bats are available. Need professional treatment.

Big Brown Bat

As the name suggests, this is a large brown bat with naked, dark membranes. The tail is enclosed in interfemoral membrane. It has short ears, a keeled calcar, and a forearm length of 39-54mm. They use hollow trees, but are equally common in buildings, including barns and churches. Although hibernacula in caves are common, this species also sometimes hibernates in cold buildings.

The wingspan of little brown bats ranges from 9 – 11″. Bats are the only mammals that engage in truly active flight. As their name suggests they are glossy brown above with a lighter gray color below. These bats can live 20 to 30 years.

In addition to being concerning and disruptive, bat infestation can be a health issue as well as damaging to your home and property. Many bats carry diseases, including rabies. Most of the human rabies cases in the United States are a result of bats. Other issues include stains on windows, on cracks and crevices, droppings under eaves and overhands, and stains and odors from urine.
WARNING! Bats should be considered armed and dangerous.
Do not attempt to exterminate them by yourself.
